Hello and welcome!
My name is Dr. Lizite Salzman (she/her), and I am a licensed clinical psychologist. My legal first name is Anlize, but I go by my nickname Lizite (“Lee-zeet”). I know my first name is unusual so I won’t be offended if it takes a few tries to get it!
Why did you start a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy practice?
I opened Salzman Psychology, LLC, after many years of clinical experience in a variety of settings. I opened my private practice so I could have the freedom to focus my work on what I do best. I chose to specialize in CBT because it is so effective, and I love getting to see clients learn skills, get better, and graduate therapy knowing they can manage their mental health for life.
How do I know you are the right person to help me?
the therapeutic relationship
It is very important to work with a therapist that is a good fit for you. A “good fit” means many things. First of all, it means feeling safe, respected, understood, and comfortable with your therapist. Therapists are people too, and we all have our own personalities and ways of working. It can be tough to know if you mesh with someone until you reach out and have a conversation, but I try to describe myself and my style below.
Treatment approach & specialized expertise
A “good fit” also means seeing someone whose therapy approach makes sense to you, and who is a trained expert at treating your concerns. I have a very specialized practice, and if your main concerns focus on other areas, I might not be the best therapist for you (and that is OK)! I believe strongly in only taking on clients when I truly feel I am the best person to help them. I want you to get better, and if I don’t think that I am the best person to help you, I will happily provide you referrals to other practitioners who might be a better fit.
What is it like to work with you?
I teach evidence based skills
When you come to treatment with me, you will learn about your diagnosis and what is maintaining your symptoms. I will also teach you the evidence based tools that you need to overcome those symptoms. I want therapy to be a place where you not only feel respected and heard, but where you learn concrete skills, and feel empowered to practice those skills outside of session.
my goal is to work myself out of a job!
I don’t want therapy to feel like a mysterious process where you somehow feel better, but aren’t really sure why. And I definitely don’t want you to feel dependent on therapy forever. In fact, my ultimate goal is to work myself out of a job! By the time you are done with treatment, I not only want you to have gotten better and achieved your treatment goals, I want you to have mastered the skills you need to maintain your mental health for life.
I show up as my authentic self and you can too!
I come to therapy as my authentic self, and I encourage you to do the same. I am relaxed, casual, direct, and to the point. I won’t be offended if you use a curse word, and I don’t care if you show up to appointments in pajamas. Therapy is a place where you can be yourself without fear of judgment.
Laughter can be a part of therapy
When I say I show up as myself, that also means I joke, make weird observations, and laugh at the absurdities of life (I’m a true Gen-Xer!). The problems that you are facing are certainly challenging, but being able to take a step back and laugh is a great coping skill and makes therapy so much more enjoyable.
I am professional and prepared
When you come to treatment with me, I am 100% focused on you and your treatment. I show up prepared and on time, I don’t do small talk, and I definitely don’t waste session time telling stories about myself and my experiences. Why? Because this is YOUR time and YOUR life, and my personal experiences really don’t matter.
session time is your time
If you have ever left a therapy session feeling confused or annoyed because the therapist seemed to talk more about themselves than you did, you will not have that experience again with me.
I will teach you about CBT & your diagnosis
If you come to treatment with me, we will be doing a lot of learning. I will teach many specific skills and strategies to address your concerns. I will also explain how CBT conceptualizes your diagnosis, so you understand how you got stuck in your current symptoms, and more importantly, how you can get UNstuck.
I provide written resources & worksheets.
I don’t want you to waste session time taking notes, or feel stressed that you will forget things we learned. So, I will often share my screen during session to provide information (for this reason it is best to join on a computer vs. a phone if possible). I will also send handouts to your client portal, which you can download and use during and after treatment.
I am a social justice advocate
I welcome all people to my practice, no matter their color, race, ethnicity, nationality, culture, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious/spiritual orientation, size, or level of physical ability. I understand the impact that all forms of oppression have on mental health, safety, and overall wellness. I invite you to freely talk about all of your lived experiences, and how they have impacted you.
You are welcome here!
I value you as a human who deserves respect, care, and acceptance. I welcome you and encourage you to come to treatment as you are.
